Bang Chan, the leader of K-pop group Stray Kids, doesn't experiment much with color. His wardrobe is mostly black, and he has a fondness for metallic chains and accessories. But the producer has recently started taking his look to the next level, thanks to his newfound interest in nail art.

In the latest vlog uploaded to the Stray Kids' YouTube channel, Bang Chan is seen giving himself a minimalistic marker mani, drawing simple geometric shapes, lines, and dots onto his nails — first with a black nail art pen and then with a permanent marker.

Using a nail art pen and finishing it off with a matte topcoat, the vlog shows the 24-year-old perfecting his design well into the morning hours. His left hand is a mix of shapes, crosses, and bold lines, while his right is a more simple arrangement of delicate dots. (The woes of being right-handed!) After suffering through several broken pens, he turns to a permanent marker to get the job done. Though, if you're trying this at home, he warns that "applying topcoat onto permanent marker makes it smudge." So you might want to get yourself either a good nail art pen or actual polish and a fine brush before resorting to marker. But, despite Channie's non-conventional tool, the result is extremely high-quality.

"It’s a hobby of some sort," the Aussie tells the camera about his interest in nail art, which he's started using a tool to express himself. "I wanted to find something that’s fun and try it. I was trying to find something stylish that’s my own," he says. "I thought it’d be fun to just draw it on myself."

If you've watched the music video for Stray Kids' recent single "Thunderous," you might have spotted Bang Chan's nail designs. "I drew mine myself," he says in the vlog. He even promoted the song with them.

For a group that's all about following their own path and being unbothered by the noise of public opinion, it's cool to see Bang Chan indulge in self-care and express himself through something other than his music. His bandmate Han is also a fan of painted digits; the rapper and producer prefers a classic onyx manicure.

And they're not the only ones. Global stars like A$AP Rocky, Bad Bunny, and Mark Tuan are also bringing the counterculture trend back into the mainstream, eschewing binary stereotypes of masculinity in favor of fun, dynamic motifs, and colorful polish. Rapper Lil Yachty even launched his own nail polish line, called Crete, earlier this year. On TikTok, the #guyswithnailpolish tag currently has over 1.5 million views, and #boyswithnailpolish has garnered more than 1.3 million views.

Fans of Stray Kids are already replicating Bang Chan's nails — a real domino effect — and embracing the freedom that comes from truly being yourself.
