Spoiler: It's all about the headpiece.

After a triumphant return in September 2021, the Met Gala is back to its rightful place on the calendar (that is, the First Monday in May). And while we can't take our eyes off the "Gilded Glamour"-themed red carpet looks, the beauty looks deserve a moment in the spotlight as well. From Vanessa Hudgens to Alicia Keys and Emma Chamberlain, keep scrolling to see the best—and yes, most over-the-top—hair and makeup looks from the 2022 Met Gala.

Hailey Bieber's sleek updo, paired with a more natural-looking makeup look, is utterly timeless on the red carpet.

The only thing that could possibly top off Alicia Keys's skyline-themed Ralph Lauren gown? An equally architectural ponytail. (PS: She's wearing products from her own Keys Soulcare collection!)

It's hard to compete with her dramatic gown, so Blake wisely kept the hair and makeup (by Kristofer Buckle for Charlotte Tilbury) simple. Her pretty rose lipstick is a near perfect match to the pink in her dress, while her long blonde hair (by Jennifer Yepez using Dyson tools) is held back with an ornate tiara.

The vibrancy of Normani's colorful eyeshadow and blush shades stood out next to her modern, all black Met Gala look.

The singer's soft, wavy updo created by stylist Andrew Fitzsimons (using his namesake collection) was embellished with floral hair accessories that echoed her Prabal Gurung look.

Lucy never lets us down with her makeup looks, and her jewel-encrusted lashes are just the latest one we want to copy right away.

Kaling went monochromatic, matching her eyeshadow and lip color back to her lilac gown.

In one of the night's best nail looks, Shawn Mendes wore a manicure by Betina Goldstein that showed off the iconic logo of his designer for the evening, Tommy Hilfiger.

The model's hairstyle featured a figure-8 braid by Naeemah LaFond for Amika. They chose the look in order to "make a statement, yet still allow the dress and the jewelry to be center stage."

Sister Kim Kardashian may have bleached her hair for the event, but Kendall Jenner surprised everyone by bleaching her brows. Plus, she kept her products all in the family: Makeup artist Mary Phillips used Kylie Skin and Kylie Cosmetics to create her look.

The Euphoria star went for Old Hollywood glam in deep crimson lipstick and stained cheeks (by Kelsey Deenihan, who used Armani Beauty makeup and Skinfix skincare products). Her hair is crafted by stylist Peter Lux using FEKKAI products and Olivia Garden tools.

Camila took the event's theme to heart, wearing a wash of gold eyeshadow (by Carolina Gonzalez for Armani Beauty) to complement her sequin gown. Her tousled updo was created by celebrity David Stanwell using Amika products.

Tennis star and beauty founder Venus Williams debuted intricately gilded hip-length braids created by celebrity stylist Nikki Nelms for Maui Moisture.

Tiny pearls and a cat eye leveled up Dove Cameron's eye makeup (by Kale Teter, who prepped the skin with Lancer skincare products), while abstract hair accessories kept the drama going into her half-up hairstyle (by Jacob Rozenberg using Great Lengths hair extensions and Harry Josh Pro Tools).

The actress's intricate updo (by Danielle Priano for SexyHair) is embellished, braided, and slicked back—yet it all works, especially paired with her smoky makeup by Tonya Brewer for Pat McGrath Labs.

Emma Stone's simple yet bold glam, created by celebrity makeup artist Rachel Goodwin using Pat McGrath Labs and prepped with Monastery Skincare, makes a statement next to her minimalist white dress.

In addition to her voluminous hairstyle, Kiki Layne's painterly eyeshadow look was one of our favorites of the night.

Glossier brand ambassador Olivia Rodrigo brought 1900s-meets-1990s playfulness to the carpet with the addition of a few playful butterfly hair accents worn in her loose waves (styled by Clayton Hawkins for Dove Hair).

Kaia switched up her look with ultra-long waves for the occasion, kept in place with embellished hair clips and paired with a classic cat eye.

Janelle was true to their signature style in a classic red lip, feathery lashes, and glowing skin.

Gold brows were an unexpected metallic accent to the model's glam makeup by Marcelo Gutierrez.

Another look, another tiara! Tommy's gold headpiece topped off a soft, face-framing updo and barely there makeup look by Shayna Gold for M.A.C Cosmetics.

Actress Jodie Turner-Smith was the epitome of Old Hollywood glam with face-framing finger waves and pencil-thin eyebrows, punctuated by tiny gems.

We're loving Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim's pink-tinged, monochromatic beauty look (by Colby Smith for Pat McGrath Labs, with skin prepped with 111Skin products), which features a subtle yet vibrant inner corner eye pattern.

The YouTube star's ethereal eye makeup (by Kelsey Deenihan for Bareminerals) is entrancing, and the perfect complement to her newly platinum bob (styled by Laura Polko for T3), adorned with—you guessed it—a diamond tiara.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell literally channeled gilded glamour with the addition of face jewels atop her makeup by Adam Wolfgang for Pat McGrath Labs.

Charlotte Tilbury herself created this sophisticated makeup look that pairs perfectly with the actress's gilded gown and sculptural bob.
